A Saxophonist, Taiwo Owaniyi with the stage name BRASS ORACLE is a graduate of Music from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
In this interview with Damilola Akinmolayan, the lfe-born entertainer disclosed that he is not just a saxophonist, but a music minister. Excerpts:
What is your opinion about 90s music?
Well, I’ll say I prefer most of the 90s songs to the ones that are being sung today. Most of the songs in the 90s are educative. Most of those songs if not all performed a great task by reducing moral decadence in our society. Also, they were highly therapeutic. Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey, Onyeka Onwenu, Sunny Ade’s songs in the 90s were loaded with lessons to be learnt and they were morally right. Those songs helped correct lots of ills in our society unlike today as most of the songs are nothing to write home about. Today’s songs do not even agree with our culture which is our way of life. Indecent dressing, pornographic scenes, etc are mostly common in songs of today. Furthermore, the lyrics of 90s songs are embedded with lessons that have the ability to shapen the life of a child positively. But, lyrics of most of the songs today are sheer nonsense. Nothing positive to learn from except danceable rhythms and if our society is going to be better, we need more than rhythms. We need lyrics powerful enough to influence the life of a child positively.
If you are not a Saxophonist, what would have been doing?
“Well, I will probably be teaching in a school or sitting in an office.
What is the funniest or weirdest question that you have ever been asked?
“Have not been asked a weird question during interview but have been asked a funny/wierd question by someone. He asked, have you ever impregnated a lady?
If you can have your fans remember one thing about you, what would it be?
I am not just a saxophonist but a child of God born of incorruptible seed.
If you are to be a fruit, which one would you be and why?.
“Palm tree. Palm tree is useful for a lot of things most especially for palm oil from the palm fruits. Nothing seems like a waste in palm tree including the tree after it has been cut off you can get brooms from the leaves.
If you have the opportunity to date any other Saxophonist, who would it be and why?
“I will date Ruth(Rutherford). To mention just her, I’d date her because she’s a child of God. Also, she’s musically and spiritually sound.
What was the most embarrassing trouble you ever have gotten into?
When I bought a saxophone from someone. This issue escalated to the extent of the person threatened to arrest me with SARS when he was the one at fault.
What is your next wish?
I am still wishing to study music in Berklee, USA.
What is your creative process like?
“Actually, my creative process is fun. There’s no tension, no strictness, no 100 pecent seriousness as I tend to create beautifully well under relaxed state of mind, body and soul.
What should we expect from you in the future?
You should be expecting not just a saxophonist but also, a healing evangelist, a minister of the Word.
Also, you should be expecting a music minister with grace to access the portals of heaven, and a minister who is hungry for more and more of God.
What are you most proud of?
“I am proud that I am a child of God and l am still with God. It’s so soothing and peaceful with God. Likewise, I am proud I am a saxophonist but not just a saxophonist but a Music Minister.
Is there a link between ethics and music?
Yes! There’s a link or a thin wall between the two. Ethics can be seen as standards that govern the conduct of a person. Also, ethics can be seen as the moral rightness or wrongness of something. For every profession, certain ethics(conducts) guides them. Likewise in music, ethics serves as guiding principles. It is also about orderliness in music.
Also, ethics helps to determine the morals of a particular song. So, ethics is pivotal in determining the right songs in our society.
