NPFL Match Day14: We played below expectation – Nasarawa United coach

“Our performance today was different from our previous games because we were expecting a better and higher performance from the boys, Nasarawa United Technical Adviser, Abubakar Arikya has said.

He added that it was unfortunate that his teams could not work as expected.

Arikya stated this after Nasarawa United were held to a 1-1 draw by Gombe United in the match day 14 of the abridged Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL decided at New Jos Stadium.

He said: “Our opponents played very well; they were better off on the ball because they played to instructions.

“Unfortunately, my boys didn’t play to instructions and that cost us the maximum points.

“Nevertheless, we are optimistic of beating the drop zone.”

The assistant coach of Gombe United,Bashir Saleh said “We are happy for today’s result, even though we were hoping for an outright win.

“During the break, we had some encouraging pep talks with the players which had a huge impact on how we performed in the reverse half.

“Going forward, we are determined to pick maximum points on the road against Shooting Stars in Ibadan in our next game.”

A 71st minute goalkeeping error by Mohammed Galadima and a cheeky strike by Ayuba Francis ensured Nasarawa United shared the points with visiting Gombe United at the New Jos Stadium.

After the first-half ended in a goalless stalemate, Gombe United went ahead in a bizarre manner after the home side’s goal tender, Mohammed Galadima, turned a cross by Usman Abbas into his own net.

The Solid Miners recovered from the shock and drew parity in the 84th minute through Nigeria’s U-20 youth attacker, Ayuba Francis.

The scoreline remained unchanged until the final whistle, a result that stagnates United at 9th position on the Group ‘A’ log with ten points.
