Crisis looms in Ondo as NURTW plans to take over parks today |

Steer clear, anyone caught will be treated as a criminal, govt warnsFollowing the ban on activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ondo State by the state government, members of the union, at the weekend, vowed to resume and take control of all motor parks across the state today.
With the development posing a potential conflict between the state government and the union, leadership of the NURTW said the move was in accordance with a court ruling allowing it reopen its closed secretariat in the state.
National President of the NURTW, Prof. Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, said the parks were legally purchased by the union in the state.

MEANWHILE, the Ondo State Government has warned against any potential disruption of public peace by NURTW members, whose activities have been suspended in the state.
The state government, which maintained that there is no going back on its position on parks’ management in the state, said the union does not exist in the state.
It said security operatives would not hesitate to deal with anyone disrupting the peace in the state.
A statement by Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Adetunji Adeleye, stated that anyone caught fomenting trouble in any park within the state would be picked up and treated like a common criminal.
The statement reads in part: “The Ondo State Government has warned against planned breaches of public peace by members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, whose operations have been suspended in the state.

“It is shocking that some of the self-acclaimed committee members of the NURTW forcefully opened the Igoba branch office, where any activity, to all intents and purposes, remains part of the operations suspended by the government.
“While arrests are yet to be made, government cannot allow such brigandage to continue unchecked.
“It is thus in line with the avowed commitment of the current administration under the able leadership of Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to ensure protection of life and property. Proactive steps will be taken to forestall any further breakdown of law and order.
“In view of this, security agencies have been put on alert to arrest anyone parading himself as NURTW member in motor parks across the state.
“While we urge the people to go about their daily activities as usual, we will resist any attempt by any group, under any guise, to disrupt the fragile peace that we currently enjoy in the state. We shall do this with all vigour.”
