Ondo State table tennis coach, Adedotun Omoniyi has commended his players for their efforts at the just concluded World Table Tennis Contender Championship (WTTCC) in Lagos.
He expressed satisfaction with the performance of the players at the contender championship, saying they have made the state proud with their rankings.
Wale Fagbamila, Taiwo Mati, Joshua Oladiran, Omeh Amadi and Kehinde Akinyinka as the only qualified female player had represented Ondo State at the (WTTCC).
Zhou Kai of China and Shin Yubin of Korea Republic, won the men and women’s singles category respectively at World Table Tennis Contender Championship held at the indoor sports hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
The Ondo State coach, affirmed that his players fought a good fight in a championship where over 64 players across the world competed, with world number one and all the Chinese players.
He said the duo of Taiwo Mati and Omeh Amadi sustained till round of 32 and 64 respectively in singles, saying Joshua Oladiran and Wale Fagbamila lost in the round of 16 in doubles.
He said: “For Omeh Amadi and his partner to also lost to the pairs of world number one in the quarter final in doubles is commendable.”
“The championship is very important to us , because we have Nigeria number one,Africa number five, U-19 Champion , Mati Taiwo is number 75 in the world while Amadi Omeh is numbers 200 . All these rankings will just go away if we did not participate in the championship.”
