Why Aiyedatiwa should Appoint his Deputy as soon as possible despite no time limit —Dr Ikubese

…..seeks roles for Constitutional Deputy governor.

Following reactions that the issue are being generated, a Former President Aspirant and Akure-based Public affairs Commentator, Dr. Thomas-Wilson Ikubese has charged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to appoint his Deputy as soon as possible since no time limit is stipulated in the constitution.

SUNSHINETRUTH News understands Aiyedatiwa is yet to appoint his deputy three weeks after he was sworn in to replace Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu who passed on during a protracted illness; the delay which is now a subject of political debate by Nigerians.

Ikubese who faulted lack of lawful roles for ‘the office of the state Deputy Governor’, noted that there is no constitutional time limit for Aiyedatiwa or governors in the country to appoint deputy governor.

While featuring on a TVC News live current affairs program on Monday, tagged ‘beyond 100 days’, Ikubese, who is also the Convener of the #YesWeFit Revolutionary Movement, noted that the delay in naming Deputy for the state by Governor Aiyedatiwa might have been caused by the recent political exigency in the state.

Reacting to questions over the agitation of social commentators and interest groups, calling on the governor to appoint his deputy without further delay, the Former Presidential Aspirant who is also a Seasoned Chief  Medical Director of Sckye Hospital, Akure, said he agreed with the position.

While citing section 193 of the Nigerian 1999 constitution (as amended), Ikubese added that not only is the governor not bound by any time frame to appoint his deputy, he said the deputy governor doesn’t have any assigned role in government, different from whatever role the governor decides to give to him.

He also said the governor is at liberty to either render the deputy governor nonfunctional or make it function at his discretion.

Ikubese said Aiyedatiwa must appoint someone who shares his vision, understands his body language, someone who will be loyal to him and Someone that belong to his school of thought.

“Going by the constitution, it’s meant to be a joint ticket by way of election. but in special situations like this where there’s a demise of the governor, and the deputy takes over. there’s no time limit as to when he (Aiyedatiwa) should appoint a deputy governor.”

He added that the state cannot be said to be missing the deputy governor because whoever will eventually occupy the office will have no constitutional functions.

“According to section 193 of the constitution, the way the role of the deputy governor is prescribed is alongside that of the commissioners. In other words, even if there’s no deputy governor, the governor can assign his role to any commission because there’s no role specified for the deputy governor in Nigeria. And that’s why I have always advocated that we should have a constitutional role for the deputy governor,” Ikubese said.

He however urged the governor to do the needful on the deputy governor’s appointment, while adding that there should be no vacuum in government.
