Backs, tasks support groups, says every vote counts
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Wednesday called for a seamless and robust synergy between the government, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and various support groups in order to secure an overwhelming victory for President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
While vowing continued support for Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, Tunji-Ojo, who emphasised the importance of extending governance benefits to the grassroots level, stated that the critical role of independent support groups in the broader political ecosystem cannot be overemphasised.
In a statement by the Director of Media, Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT), Ondo State Chapter, the minister stated this while receiving a delegation of the group, who were on a thank-you visit following what the group described as his consistent support for its activities in his home state of Ondo.
According to Tunji-Ojo, he could not, in good conscience, operate from the federal capital without ensuring reasonable support gets to his constituents in Ondo State, whether through direct party activities, mobilisation efforts, or humanitarian programmes.
The minister, who was a former federal lawmaker, stated that while the party provides a fundamental structure, many Nigerians are driven by personal conviction to support the president and require alternative platforms to channel their goodwill.
Tunji-Ojo maintained that groups like the GMT are essential for harnessing such energy, as every single vote will be crucial in the upcoming polls.
“We must put in our best to support Mr. President. I cannot sit in Abuja and fail to extend support to my people in Ondo, whether through grassroots mobilisation, party activities, or programmes that ease the suffering of the people.
“There are Nigerians who, out of conviction, want to support the President without necessarily going through the party. Support groups like GMT create a platform to harness that goodwill. In the end, it is about votes, and every single vote counts,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
The minister also commended the Ondo State leadership of GMT, led by its DG, Hon. Yusuf-Ogunleye, a former Commissioner for Works, and State Secretary, Hon. Rasheed Badmus, a former Commissioner for Natural Resources, for their steadfastness and commitment.
On the part of the GMT national delegation, led by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Bayowa Foresythe, who also serves as the General Manager/CEO of the Lagos State Mortgage Board (LAGOSHOMS), on behalf of the National Director-General of the group, Hon. Bisi Yusuf, lauded the minister for the consistent support towards the group.
According to Foresythe, a report from the Ondo State GMT Director-General, Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, identified the minister as the sole financier of several key initiatives, particularly the ongoing “Jingi Asiwaju” free medical outreach, which is currently providing services across the senatorial districts of the state.
“The leadership of GMT in Ondo informed us of your enormous support, both morally and financially. We were particularly impressed by the visibility of Mr President’s achievements on national platforms.
“These efforts deserve commendation. Here is a letter of appreciation from our national leadership. We thank you for making Nigerians proud with the remarkable turnaround in the Ministry of Interior under your watch. Today, citizens can obtain passports with greater ease, and that is a legacy worthy of recognition.”
